A furnished studio apartment near Cleveland Clinic in Fairfax, Cleveland, across the street from the main campus, sized for one person in treatment and the one person who came along. One room, one bathroom, a queen bed, and a sofa that opens into a second queen.

The space
Everything sits on one level and inside one room, so nobody walks further than they want to at the end of a hospital day. A queen bed with a wall-mounted TV takes one side and a full-size sofa takes the other, and that sofa folds out into a real second bed rather than a courtesy. Hardwood floors run throughout and the windows are oversized, so the room holds daylight. Blackout roller blinds shut the light out again at two in the afternoon when someone needs to sleep. The kitchen has quartz counters and a bar with stools, which is enough to put together a small meal at an odd hour. The bathroom has a glass-door shower, stocked with toiletries and a hair dryer.

The neighborhood
A Cleveland Clinic shuttle stop sits at the front of the building for the mornings when even a walk across the street is more than it should be. Taussig Cancer Center and Cole Eye Institute belong to the same campus, so a week of appointments rarely means a week of driving. Meijer Fairfax Market is downstairs, which means a companion can pick up groceries, coffee or a birthday card without taking the car out of the garage. Cedar Avenue carries you west toward the rest of the city when you want a change of scene, and Fairfax itself goes quiet in the evening.
