Can a family member stay overnight at Cleveland Clinic?

Not automatically. Cleveland Clinic offers open visiting hours, so your family can come and go at any hour. Staying the night is a separate permission: it is described as available in special circumstances, for one visitor, in some patient rooms, and it has to be arranged with the admitting physician before admission.

Those are two different things, and the gap between them catches people out at the worst possible moment. Here is exactly what Cleveland Clinic publishes, and what to do about it.

What Cleveland Clinic actually says

Both of these appear on the same Cleveland Clinic page, two questions apart.

Cleveland Clinic offers open visiting hours.

In special circumstances we can accommodate one visitor in some of our patient rooms. To make such arrangements, please speak with the patient's admitting physician prior to hospitalization.

Elsewhere they describe 24/7 visiting hours so you can have round-the-clock support from loved ones if needed.

None of it is wrong. Visiting really is open. But visiting and sleeping are not the same permission, and only the first one is automatic.

Read the qualifiers

Every phrase in that second quote is doing work.

• Special circumstances. Staying overnight is not a general right. Cleveland Clinic publishes no criteria for what qualifies.
• One visitor. One person, not the family.
• Some of our patient rooms. It depends on the room. Which rooms is not published.
• The patient's admitting physician. Not the nurse, not the unit clerk, not the desk on the floor.
• Prior to hospitalization. Before admission. For a planned surgery that is a phone call. For an emergency admission, that moment has already passed.

The one thing to do

If you want someone to be able to sleep in the room, ask the admitting physician before admission. Not on the day. Not at the nurses' station at 9 p.m. Before.

Put it on the list of questions for the pre-op call, alongside arrival time and what to bring. It takes thirty seconds to ask and it cannot be un-asked later.

Cleveland Clinic Children's is different, and better

For paediatric patients, Cleveland Clinic states that overnight accommodations are available for one parent or guardian to stay with each child.

Note the inversion. Children's is stricter on visiting hours, asking visitors to come between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m., and more generous on staying overnight. That is the reverse of what the adult pages imply, and it surprises parents who have read the general visiting page first.

Around surgery, the rules are more specific

• Before surgery: one or two family members or friends may stay with the patient until they go in.
• In recovery: visitors are allowed in the post-anaesthesia care unit after a two-hour period. No children are permitted in the PACU.
• Quiet hours on inpatient units run from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.

What a companion actually gets on campus

Being direct about this, because vagueness here wastes people's energy at a point when they have none to spare.

The surgical waiting lounge

Televisions, magazines and free lockers. Tell the reception desk if you leave the lounge at any point during the day, so they can find you.

Family View

A screen that lets you follow the patient's surgical progress. You get a personal code from the J1-9 receptionist when you check in on the day. Patient Service Liaisons are at 216.444.5767, staffed 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Overnight, that desk is not answering.

Somewhere to eat at 3 a.m.

Five places on main campus are open 24 hours, and all of them are open to visitors:

• The Marketplace, J Building. It also stocks over-the-counter medicine, which matters because there is no 24-hour pharmacy near main campus.
• Panera, J Building
• Starbucks, H Building
• Lerner Grab-n-Go, NB Building
• Bikur Cholim kosher room, M Building, Room M1-006, across from the elevators, with recliners, microwaves and refrigerators

Somewhere quiet, around the clock

Spiritual care is available 24 hours a day, free, regardless of faith, at 216.444.2518. The Family Chapel is on the first floor of the Glickman Tower, the Jewish Chapel is on the first floor of the H Building behind Starbucks, and a Muslim Prayer Room is on the first floor of Glickman across from the chapel.

These are the only quiet spaces on campus documented as open around the clock. They are chapels rather than respite rooms, but at 4 a.m. that distinction stops mattering.

An interpreter, free, for you as well as the patient

Cleveland Clinic's wording is that they can provide interpreters at no cost to you and your companions, available at all locations, 24/7. ASL interpreters are provided at no charge, on site for scheduled appointments, with video remote interpreting at all hospitals. Request through 216.445.7044; phone interpretation is 216.445.8900.

A walk to your car at 2 a.m.

Cleveland Clinic Police provide walking or vehicle escorts as a complimentary service for all patients, visitors and caregivers, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Call 216.444.2250.

The limit worth knowing: escorts are not provided to locations off Cleveland Clinic property. They will walk you to your car. They will not walk you to your hotel.

What Cleveland Clinic does not publish

We looked for all of these and could not find them stated anywhere. If any matters to you, ask directly rather than assuming.

• What an overnight companion is physically given. A chair, a recliner, a sleeper sofa, bedding: none of it is described.
• Which rooms qualify for an overnight visitor.
• What counts as special circumstances, or who decides.
• Showers, sleep rooms or respite rooms for companions of adult patients. The only family space documented is the surgical lounge, and it has televisions, magazines and lockers.
• How many visitors an adult patient may have at once, beyond a general note that intensive care is an exception.

One shower, and it comes with conditions

The only shower for a family member documented anywhere on main campus is in the Ronald McDonald Family Room, M Building, third floor, Room 32-06. It has a private restroom and shower with supplies provided, a kitchenette, laundry and a quiet lounge.

Two things to know before you count on it. It is published on the Ronald McDonald House Charities site rather than Cleveland Clinic's. And it closes at 5 p.m. on weekdays and 1 p.m. at weekends, which makes it useless for the hours when a companion most needs it.

One more thing: check the date on what you are reading

A pandemic-era Cleveland Clinic visitor PDF is still live and still reachable through search. It states visiting hours of 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., temperature checks on entry, and mandatory masks. All of that is contradicted by current policy, and the document carries no visible date.

If a Cleveland Clinic page or file gives you visiting rules that feel restrictive, check whether it is current before you rearrange your plans around it.

If the stay is going to be long

For one or two nights, a chair beside the bed is survivable. Past that, it stops being a question of willpower.
