Getting from Cleveland Hopkins Airport to Cleveland Clinic
Cleveland Clinic says the airport is about 30 minutes away and points you at a taxi. There is also a train from inside the terminal that costs $2.50, and no Cleveland Clinic patient page mentions it.
You land at Cleveland Hopkins with a bag, an appointment letter, and no real sense of how far away the hospital is. The taxi rank is right outside the doors. It is the easiest decision you will make all day, and for a lot of people it is the right one.
It is not the only one. There is a train station inside the terminal, and the ride from it to Cleveland Clinic costs $2.50.
Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is about 30 minutes from Cleveland Clinic main campus by car. That figure is Cleveland Clinic's own. What their patient pages do not mention is the RTA Red Line, which leaves from the lower level of the terminal and reaches the Clinic with one transfer on a single $2.50 fare.
Which option is right for you comes down to two things: how much you are carrying, and how well the person traveling with you is moving. Here is what each one actually involves.

The Cleveland Clinic shuttle does not serve the airport. It runs between campus buildings and the three on-campus hotels. Cleveland Hopkins appears on no published shuttle route. Akron-Canton is about an hour away and has no rail link at all.
The train Cleveland Clinic does not mention
Most airport rail links involve a shuttle bus to a station somewhere off the property. This one does not.
Cleveland Hopkins has an RTA Red Line station on the lower level of the main terminal. You walk to it. There is no connecting bus and no second terminal to find.
The Red Line runs seven days a week from roughly 4 a.m. until roughly 12:30 a.m., with trains about every 15 minutes for most of the day. It reaches Tower City station in downtown Cleveland in under 30 minutes.
From Tower City you transfer to an eastbound HealthLine and stay on Euclid Avenue until the Euclid Avenue at Clinic Drive stop. The HealthLine runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at roughly ten-minute frequency during peak hours.
We went looking for this route on Cleveland Clinic's patient travel pages and could not find it mentioned anywhere. Their published airport guidance is taxis and car services.
What it costs
- Single ride: $2.50. One fare covers the transfer.
- All-day pass: $5.00, valid until 3 a.m. the following day.
- Seniors, riders with disabilities and children: $1.25 single, $2.50 all day. You need valid photo ID, which can be an RTA Senior ID, a state ID, or a Medicare card with a photo.
How long to allow
Neither operator publishes a door-to-door time for the combined trip, so we will not invent one. The published figures cover each leg separately: under 30 minutes on the Red Line, and a HealthLine every ten minutes or so at peak.
Budget an hour, and more if you are arriving outside peak hours when the transfer wait stretches. If you have an appointment the same day, take the car and stop thinking about it.
When the train is the wrong choice
We would rather tell you this plainly than have you find out on a platform at nine at night. Three things decide it.
Luggage. You will move between a train, a platform and a bus. There is no porter and nowhere to leave a bag.
How you are moving. Between Public Square and East 105th Street, HealthLine stations sit on median platforms in the middle of Euclid Avenue. Every station is accessible with level boarding from the vehicle, and there are tactile pavers and countdown crossing signals. But RTA's own instruction is to stay in the designated crosswalk to reach the center median. There is no bridge and no tunnel. You get to the platform by crossing a live traffic lane at street level.
Who you are traveling with. If the patient has just flown in for surgery, or is recovering from one, this is not the trip to save $40 on.
If you land after midnight
Late flights change the math entirely.
The Red Line stops running at roughly 12:30 a.m. and starts again around 4 a.m. If you land inside that window, the train is not an option and you are taking a car.
The HealthLine runs 24 hours, so the second half of the trip is always available. It is the first half that closes overnight.
Check the morning you travel
One more thing before you commit to the train.
Red Line track work has been frequent through 2026, with maintenance closures announced at short notice. Check RTA's service alerts the morning you fly rather than the week before.
A reassurance on the 2026 service reductions, since they worried a lot of people: neither the Red Line nor the HealthLine is on RTA's list of affected routes in either round of cuts. The routes named were the #1, #15, #41-41F, #50 and #77 for frequency reductions, the #35 discontinued, and weekend reductions on the #25, #28-28A and #83.
Also worth knowing: the HealthLine timetable posted at stations is dated March 2024. Treat specific departure times as a guide and the frequency as the real figure.
What Cleveland Clinic tells you to do
Their published advice is taxis and car services. If you want help arranging one, the number on their travel page is 216.445.3114, and Patient Support Services is at Desk J1 in the Miller Family Pavilion.
That is also the right call if you are arriving for a procedure, traveling with someone who is unwell, or landing at an hour when you have no patience left. There is no prize for doing this the hard way.
Before you fly
- Confirm which campus you are going to. Cleveland Clinic has hospitals across Northeast Ohio, and every one of their pages shows the main campus address in the footer. Check the address in the body of your appointment letter.
- Check RTA alerts if you plan to take the train.
- Decide before you land. Standing in an arrivals hall at 11 p.m. weighing a train against a taxi is the worst possible moment to think it through.
